The Dress, by Hamza Mejri

The Dress, by Hamza Mejri

Zaida Melo was happy to design and provide dresses for The Dress' exhibition by Hamza Mejri, fashion photographer.

The purpose of the exhibition is to present some cultural and historical use of the dress, this timeless piece of clothes that both women and men can wear. Zaida Melo created the wedding dress look (entirely handmade) as well as a child dress, a spring dress (worn by quebec famous singer Amylie) and the dress in which the designer herself is posing, inspired by the wind. Last but not least, Zaida Melo also provided Hamza Mejri with her famous Diva dress, originally created for pop singer Carissa Vales and perfectly worn by model Tania posing as a glamorous widow.

This ring may be embellished with diamonds or engraved with your lover’s name, crafted with rich detail or have a very simple design. One thing is for sure, the wedding band is one of the most significant pieces of jewellery you will wear. The ritual of the wedding band started as a tender gesture with ancient man shaping plants or twigs in the form of a ring and offering it to their bride. Since then, the wedding ring has maintained its integrity and has managed to preserve its importance throughout history as it has come to represent the most precious of human emotions—love.

Today, whether it’s made of gold, platinum, titanium, or any other metal, the wedding band still holds a most relevant place among wedding jewels. Filled with symbolism and intrinsic value, the perfect circle is the epitome of never-ending love and devotion. A vast selection of wedding rings is sure to beguile any bride. The engagement ring you wear can be matched to your band, and according to jewellers it may be worn on its own or as part of a set. While some brides are attracted to rings that are very ornate others prefer to wear a simple band together with the engagement ring. The half eternity or full eternity ring complements many different styles of engagement rings and allows for flexibility; it can be worn together or on its own. If you choose a ring that is asymmetrical, it’s best to wear it on one hand and wear your band on the other hand. White, pink, or yellow gold bands come in various shapes and sizes—pick the one that expresses you best. And let’s not forget…your husband needs a dazzling wedding band too! The groom’s ring may be identical or completely different to his bride’s. Men are incorporating their own bling by choosing trendy, decorative bands with baguettes or brilliant-cut diamonds.

A glimpse into the past may provide insight on how these rings came to be and how they have expressed love and faith through time. The ancient Egyptians believed that a vein connected the fourth finger to the heart; they called it the “vena amoris” or vein of love. In most cultures the wedding band is still worn on the fourth finger of the left or right hand. For some Hindu women, the toe ring or bichiya is much more than a fashion statement; it reveals their marital status with decorative toe-rings being worn by married women only. The Russian Catholic trinity ring is a powerful symbol of unwavering love and faith. It consists of three rings intertwined; they are often three different colours of gold, reminding us of today’s Cartier ring. The Turkish Puzzle Ring developed thousands of years ago consisted of multiple pieces (like a puzzle) that were joined together in an intricate way. The Irish Claddagh Ring shows two hands holding a crowned heart. Each culture found a special way to craft rings as expressions of never-ending love and devotion. Explore the various styles and find the one that’s right for you.
